DD_Rescue to the Rescue
My Game Plan
Running DD_Rescue
Checking the New Drive
Test Boot the New Drive
Summry of the Process
References

Here is the summary of what I did:

  • Install a second hard drive.
  • Configure bios to see the new hard drive
  • Boot to the Knoppix CD using the boot options "knoppix 2 noapic" (noapic setting allowed Knoppix to see my SATA drives.  You may ne required this setting)
  • From the root prompt run "dd_rescue -r /dev/sda /dev/sdb".  Repeat as necessary until you are happy with the results.
  • From the root prompt run "e2fsck -b nnnnnn /dev/sdb7" to repair the copied file system on the new hard drive.
  • Reboot the Knoppix CD by running "Shutdown -r now" from a root prompt (This is so Knoppix can read the new partitions on the new hard drive)
  • After booting to Knoppix a second time, go in and salvage, copy and or save the existing files on the new partition on the new hard drive.
  • Shutdown Knoppix and the Server.
  • Rearrange the hard drives so that only the new drive was operational.
  • Reconfigure the bios to see the new drive arrangment.
  • Boot to the new hard drive.
  • Fix any remaining errors that were reported.
  • Put the server back in operation.
