Overview
Linux is a open source operating system created as a University project back in the late 80's and early 90's.  It was made into a "free" open source code operating system by its author Linus Travalds.  I won't go into all the details and history of Linux, there are a great number of articles that tell the story much better than I could ever do.

In particular, Linux is most like Unix.  Don't let this being 'like' Unix scare you.  It is an extremely easy operating system to work on and tinker around in once you get your bearings.  It is definitely much easier to repair than Windows is when it comes to the infamous "Windows Registry" corruption.
