Winding It All Up
What I hope to show you here is that there is an alternative to running Microsoft Windows. And that if you have the persistence and curiosity to explore, that a whole new frontier can open up to you.

One alternative among many alternative operating systems is Linux.  This will be the operating system I will be focusing on here.

Why am I focusing on Linux?

Mainly because it was the operating system that I accidentally stumbled across at Best Buy for $9.  It was a toss up between Caldera Linux at $9 and FreeBSD at $30 about 4 or 5 years ago.  Who knows where I would be now if I had chosen FreeBSD instead.

Later on in this article I will show you how you can get Linux "legally" for the cost of a blank CD-R and a little bit of effort on your part.  When they say "free" they literally mean "free".  Not five-finger discount free.

But not so free that you wouldn't need to pay the guy that burned your CD for you or put it into a fancy box with a nice printed manual.  It cost money to package it and support the product they put their name onto.
