There is more than one way to get past a draw bridge on a river.

Only in Southern Lousiana....

Image

The Tug boat is headed toward the bridge with a barge loaded with coal.

Image

... and the barge passed gracefully under the bridge without incident.

Image

Oh CRAP!!!  The bridge didn't open and the boat can't stop.

Notice that the tug has released the barge.  He is backing as hard as possible to try and avoid a collision  with the bridge.

Image

Whew!  Just a little love tap with the bridge.  Ok, now to just back away from the bridge and and let the draw bridge operator open it up for us.

Image

Hmmm.  Can't back up.  Lets just ease it around and see if we can get to slower water.   Rut-roh!  the current is swinging the  boat around a bit earlier than we planned.

Image

"What the....    this is an interesting turn of events!!! "

"Somthing's not quite right, but I can't quite put my finger it, but nothing good can come of this!"

Image

"Now this is and interesting view of the river.  Not many people get a chance to see it up close and personal like this!"

Image

"Hey, have I ever showed you what the bottom side of a bridge looks like when it is only 2 feet above the water?"

Image

"Not much to look at really.  Seen the bottom of one bridge 2 feet above the water, seen them all."

Image

She's low, but the flag is still flying.

Image

The wheelhouse door and the door on the second deck are now open.

Image

Look at the water still pouring out the second deck doorway.

Image

Working deck is still underwater, but still rising.

Notice anything unusual?  See the smoke coming off the back end.  This thing is still running!!!

Image

"Now thats how we did it back in my day before they invented them new fangled draw bridges!"

"Back when Men were Men and Women were darn proud of it!"

Notice the propwash at the rear of the tug boat.  this boat is upright and back under its own power.

Ho Hum.  Just another day on the river.
