Local 71 web site: http://www.iuec71.org/news.htm On January 1, 2002, changes to Chapter 399, Florida Statues (FS), enacted during the 2001 regular session of the Legislature go into effect. The changes include annual registration of Certified Elevator Inspectors and Elevator Companies with the Bureau of Elevator Safety, maintaining insurance coverage, either individually or through a company, and successfully passing an examination to qualify for a Certificate of Competency. Accordingly, the bureau is pursuing implementation of the enacted changes. Mechanics who do not posses a Certificate of Competency card should immediately begin the process of obtaining one. Currently the bureau recognizes successfully passing one of the following examinations as a standard to qualify for an elevator certificate of competency as defined in Section 399.01 (19), Florida Statutes: 1. National Elevator Industry Education Program (NEIEP) Elevator Mechanics Certification examination. 2. American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) examination. 3. National Association of Elevator Constructors (NAEC) Certified Elevator Technician examination. 4. The department's Certificate of Competency examination offered through Experior Assessments. "STATE OF FLORIDA ELEVATOR ANNOUNCEMENTS" If you have four years in the business,and want to stay working as a Mechanic, or Temporary Mechanic you must apply for the license and in some cases take the exam. Call The State of Florida, Department of Safety, Elevator Division and ask for pamphlets on the licensing process. You can reach them at (850)-488-9097. If you have to sit for the State Exam you will need to purchase books for the exam. You will need the NEC code and handbook, and ANSI A117.1. For elevator Inspectors you will also need QEI Certification now.
