From the I.U.E.C. Local 71 web site: http://www.iuec71.org/news.htm On January 1, 2002, changes to Chapter 399, Florida Statues (FS), enacted during the 2001 regular session of the Legislature go into effect. The changes include annual registration of Certified Elevator Inspectors and Elevator Companies with the Bureau of Elevator Safety, maintaining insurance coverage, either individually or through a company, and successfully passing an examination to qualify for a Certificate of Competency. Accordingly, the bureau is pursuing implementation of the enacted changes. Mechanics who do not posses a Certificate of Competency card should immediately begin the process of obtaining one. Currently the bureau recognizes successfully passing one of the following examinations as a standard to qualify for an elevator certificate of competency as defined in Section 399.01 (19), Florida Statutes: 1.
